Evan Tipton, Esports Advisor, for NGame Esports talks about EWE Baskets Oldenburg entering the esports space through NBA 2K.
German basketball team EWE Baskets Oldenburg launched a NBA 2K team last year and now have new partnerships. What is your opinion about already established sporting organizations adding esports to its network?
Sports organizations that are adding esports are simply playing it safe. By slowly entering the market they are able to gauge how much the cost will be in order to recruit, maintain, and possibly keep an established team, not to mention if it will have any ROI benefits.
EWE Baskets Oldenburg also entered the NBA 2K European Summer League. In what ways do you think this benefits the NBA’s ability to grow the game internationally?
Exposure is the best way to expand something with a small following. By keeping up with tournaments and looking for new ways to engage with the community you can easily grow the 2K league. The most difficult part is finding a way to bridge the gap between video games and physical sports fans. If this can be done somehow the growth will be astronomical. I believe this pertains to anyone within the esport.
